Hello and thanks for joining me! It’s been a hectic few weeks, but art has definitely been happening. As well as the festive season (which with two children under the age of 5 was always going to be manic), I had a small operation a few days before Christmas that has left me unable to pick them up for a month. The plus side of being a bit less mobile has been the excuse to sit at my desk and get on with art. I’ve even managed to join Fine Art America!
I’ve mainly spent my time working on Territory – the comic collaboration between myself and my husband Neil. Working in photoshop and doing art digitally has been an interesting experience so far. Ordinarily, an hour or two painting leaves me relaxed and energised, but it’s been very different working digitally. I quickly realised how physical I am when I’m painting. I use my whole arm and body, standing up or with a leg wrapped around part of the easel – it’s a bit wonky, so I sometimes do that to stabilize it if I’m working on a detail! In contrast, after finishing a session of digital painting in photoshop with my wacom tablet and pen, I found myself extremely tense. Working in constant tiny, tight strokes, hunched over the desk left me cramped with my shoulders around my ears! It’s getting easier and I’ve adjusted my chair and monitor height, but I will be very happy to return to getting messy with paint once this project is finished.
Here’s a little preview of a couple of panels I’ve been working on:
And this is how they look at the beginning rough sketch stage before being inked, scanned and digitally coloured:
I’ve also designed two covers for Neil for his recent short stories – the first story STONE is now available on Amazon, Kobo and also iBooks. The second one is called PAINT and will be available very soon. Here’s the cover for Stone:
And finally, I’ve designed a logo for Hanesyn -the company that Neil’s short story collection After The Rain is with, and will also be publishing the Territory comic in print and ebook format when it’s ready.
And on that note, I’d better get back to it!
See you soon folks x
